Mr Teo Ming Kian has been Chairman of Vertex Venture Holdings Ltd, a venture capital firm, since May 2012. He is also Chairman of Tessa Therapeutics Pte Ltd – a cancer immunotherapy startup; Tychan Pte Ltd – a startup developing therapeutics against infectious diseases; JOil – developing new breeds of Jatropha for renewable oil and protein; Temasek Foundation Ecosperity CLG Ltd – supporting innovations to sustainably enhance liveability of cities; as well as Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory Ltd – harnessing the power of the life sciences to improve lives and its technology transfer arm, Temasek Lifesciences Accelerator.
Mr Teo is also a Board Director of Temasek Holdings and Nestia – a one-stop lifestyle platform to reduce the complexities of everyday life, as well as Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering. Before his retirement from the Singapore Civil Service, Mr Teo held Permanent Secretary and Executive Chairman positions in several Singapore government ministries and agencies. He retired from the Singapore Civil Service in October 2011 as the Permanent Secretary for National Research and Development, Prime Minister’s Office. He had also served as Chairman of Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, MediaCorp Pte Ltd and Singapore Technology Pte Ltd, as well as director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, INSEAD and the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship Board. He was also Chairman of the Earth Observatory of Singapore – a research centre of excellence focused on geohazards in the Nanyang Technology University.
Mr Teo was conferred the Singapore Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 1993, the Commander First Class — Royal Order of the Polar Star (Sweden) in 1994, the Distinguished Alumni Award, Monash University, Australia in 1999, the Meritorious Service Medal in 2008 and the Defence Technology Medal (Distinguished Leadership) in 2015. Mr Teo holds a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from Monash University in Australia, and Master of Science degree in Management Studies from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
